Overview:
The Turquoise Gem of the Salkantay Route
Escape the ordinary and ascend to the crystal-clear waters of Humantay Lake, a turquoise jewel nestled at the base of the sacred Salkantay Glacier. This Private Humantay Lake Tour transforms a demanding high-altitude trek into a manageable and deeply personal adventure. Unlike shared groups that push a uniform pace, our private service gives you the autonomy to hike slowly, breathe deeply, and truly connect with the raw power of the Andes.
Your day begins with a private pickup and a scenic drive to the trailhead at Soraypampa. From there, the trail rises steeply towards the glacier. With your private guide carrying oxygen and setting a rhythm that matches your fitness level, you can conquer the altitude with confidence.
Upon reaching the lake, enjoy the silence and spirituality of the site before the crowds arrive or after they leave. Whether you want to meditate by the water, take a hundred photos, or simply sit in awe of the hanging glaciers, this tour offers the freedom to experience Humantay on your terms.

Detailed Itinerary
A Journey to the Sky
04:30 AM: Early Private Departure
Your private driver and guide collect you from your Cusco hotel. Wrap yourself in the warm blankets provided in our vehicle and catch up on sleep as we drive north towards the Limatambo Valley.
Morning: Fuel & Trailhead
Breakfast in Mollepata: We stop at a local restaurant for a hearty, energy-packed breakfast to prepare you for the climb. Arrival at Soraypampa: We drive to the trailhead at Soraypampa (3,900m / 12,795 ft), offering the first stunning views of the Salkantay and Humantay peaks.
Mid-Morning: The Ascent
The Hike: We begin the uphill trek. It typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours. The Pace: Since this is 100% private, we take as many breaks as you need. Your guide will share stories of the local flora and the spiritual significance of the Apus (mountain spirits) while monitoring your oxygen levels. The Horse Option: If you prefer, you can rent a horse locally for the majority of the ascent (additional cost), saving your legs for the final panoramic stretch.
Mid-Day: Humantay Lake
Arrive at the lake (4,200m / 13,779 ft). The vivid turquoise color against the white snow of the glacier is surreal. You have ample time to explore the shoreline, climb to a higher viewpoint for the classic photo, or simply relax. Your guide can lead a small offering ceremony to the Pachamama if you wish.
Afternoon: Descent & Lunch
The Descent: The walk back down takes about 1 hour and is much easier on the lungs. Lunch: We return to Mollepata for a delicious buffet lunch featuring local Andean dishes to refuel after the exertion.
18:00 PM: Return to Cusco
Relax on the drive back to the city, arriving at your hotel in time for a restful evening.

Frequently asked questions
Clearing Your Doubts
Q: How hard is the hike compared to Rainbow Mountain?
A: Humantay is shorter (1.5 hours up vs 2 hours at Rainbow Mountain) and slightly lower in altitude, but it is steeper. Many travelers find it slightly easier than Rainbow Mountain because the duration is shorter, but it is still a physical challenge due to the thin air.
Q: Can I swim in the lake?
A: No, swimming is strictly prohibited to protect the purity of the water, which is a source for local communities. Plus, the water is near-freezing!
Q: Is this suitable for children?
A: We generally recommend this for active children over 10-12 years old who are well-acclimatized. Younger children may struggle with the steepness and altitude. If bringing kids, we highly recommend renting horses.
Q: What if I can't finish the hike?
A: Your guide carries oxygen and will be with you every step. If you cannot continue, you can turn back with the guide's assistance, or wait at a lower point. The horse rental is also a great safety net.
