Descripción general:
The Mirror of the Volcanoes
Step into a landscape that feels like another planet on this Private Salinas Salt Lagoon Tour. Located within the Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve, this high-altitude salt flat offers a stark, breathtaking beauty dominated by the active Ubinas Volcano and the snowy Pichu Pichu.
This private expedition is designed for nature lovers and photographers who want to escape the city and connect with the raw power of the Andes. You’ll witness herds of wild vicuñas grazing on the puna, see local communities harvesting salt as they have for centuries, and—if the season is right—marvel at thousands of pink flamingos reflecting in the shallow waters.
Because we travel in a private 4x4 vehicle with an expert guide carrying oxygen, you can explore this remote, high-altitude environment (14,100 ft) with confidence and comfort, stopping whenever you want to capture the perfect shot of a llama against the volcanic horizon.

Itinerario detallado
Ascendiendo al Altiplano
07:00 a.m.: Ascenso panorámico
Mañana: The Gateway Village (Chiguata)
Tarde: Regreso a Arequipa

Recomendaciones
- Altitude Warning: This tour goes very high (4,300m / 14,100 ft). Do not do this on your first day. We recommend at least 2 days of acclimatization in Arequipa first.
- Dress for Extremes: The sun is incredibly strong (UV radiation), but the wind is freezing. Wear layers: thermal base, fleece, windproof jacket, scarf, gloves, and a hat. Sunglasses are mandatory due to the glare from the salt.
- Hydration: Drink double the water you normally would. Avoid alcohol the night before.
- Best Time for Flamingos: The best months to see flamingos are usually from January to March (rainy season) when there is water in the lagoon, though some are present year-round.

Preguntas frecuentes
Clearing Your Doubts
Is it safe to go this high?
Yes, with precautions. Our guides carry oxygen and constantly monitor your condition. Since it's a private tour, we can descend immediately if you feel unwell. We drive slowly to help you adjust.
Can we walk on the salt flat?
In the dry season (May-December), yes, you can walk on the hard salt crust (similar to Uyuni but smaller). In the rainy season (January-March), it becomes a mirror lake, and we stay on the edges to avoid getting stuck in the mud.
Is this tour suitable for children?
We caution against bringing young children (under 8) due to the extreme altitude, unless they are very well acclimatized and used to mountains. For teenagers, it is a great adventure.
How long is the drive?
It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the lagoon from Arequipa, depending on road conditions. The road is unpaved in sections, which is why a private, rugged vehicle is essential.
