What to Wear to Machu Picchu: The Smart Packing List for Comfort & Style

Packing for Machu Picchu is a paradox. You need to be prepared for four seasons in one day, but you also need to carry as little as possible because large backpacks are banned inside the archaeological site. The weather in the Andes can shift from scorching high-altitude sun to chilly wind and rain in the span of an hour.

What should I wear? is one of the top questions we get. You want to look stylish for your photos, but you also need to be practical.

Here is the Smart Luxury packing list for 2025:

  1. Layers are Non-Negotiable: Start with a moisture-wicking base layer (t-shirt). Add a warm mid-layer like a fleece or light down jacket. Top it off with a high-quality, waterproof windbreaker. You will likely peel these off and put them back on multiple times.
  2. Footwear: You don’t need heavy-duty mountaineering boots unless you are doing the 4-day Inca Trail. A sturdy pair of broken-in trail runners or light hiking shoes with good grip is perfect. The stone steps can be slippery, so traction is key.
  3. Sun Protection: The UV radiation at high altitude is intense. A wide-brimmed hat and high-SPF sunscreen are mandatory.
  4. Bug Spray: Yes, there are sandflies (biting gnats) at Machu Picchu because it is located in the cloud forest. Do not forget this.
