Cusco to Machu Picchu: The Complete Travel Guide (Train, Trek, or Private Van?)

For the uninitiated, the geography of the Sacred Valley can be surprisingly confusing. You land in Cusco, but Machu Picchu is actually about 50 miles away, tucked deep in the tropical cloud forest. You can’t just grab an Uber to the entrance. The journey involves a complex combination of road and rail, and if you don’t plan it right, it can become a logistical nightmare of transfers, waiting rooms, and taxi haggling.

Basically, you have three main options: the hard way (trekking for days), the backpacker way (a convoluted mix of local buses and walking), or the smart way: Private Transfer + Luxury Train.

Most travelers get stuck trying to figure out if they should depart from Poroy or Ollantaytambo stations. Here is the reality: Poroy is closer to Cusco (about 30 minutes) but has limited frequencies and closes completely during the rainy season (Jan-April) for safety. Ollantaytambo is deeper in the valley but offers more train options. Trying to coordinate a taxi from your hotel to Ollantaytambo (a 1.5-hour drive) on the morning of your tour adds unnecessary anxiety. Will the driver show up? Will the vehicle be clean? Will there be traffic?

The Seamless Solution: The Bimodal Private Transfer

At True Peru Experience, we believe the journey should be as comfortable as the destination. We eliminate the friction of transit.

Your day begins with a pickup from your hotel lobby in a private, sanitized van. You don't have to drag your luggage through the cobblestone streets. Our professional driver takes you through the stunning landscapes of the Sacred Valley, allowing you to stop for photos whenever you wish—something impossible on a bus.

We drop you directly at the private gate of the train station. From there, we recommend the Vistadome train for the journey to Aguas Calientes. Why the Vistadome? Because it features panoramic windows that wrap around the ceiling, ensuring you don't miss the transition from the Andean sierra to the lush jungle canyon.

Arrival in Aguas Calientes

The anxiety usually spikes again upon arrival: Where do I go now? Where is the bus to the ruins?

On a private tour, these questions are irrelevant. Your private guide meets you right at the train platform, tickets in hand. We escort you past the confused crowds and straight to the shuttle bus line. We have pre-purchased your bus tickets to avoid that queue as well.

We bridge the gap between getting there and being there. No lines, no confusion, just a seamless flow from your hotel door to the Inca citadel.

Your time is too valuable to be spent figuring out bus schedules or negotiating cab fares in Spanish. Let us handle the complex logistics so you can focus on the view.
